Types of Light Bulbs 

There are several options when choosing a light bulb - incandescent, halogen, CFL and LED. It's important to consider your needs along with energy efficiency.

Incandescent bulbs are being phased out due to low efficiency. They produce light by heating a filament.

Halogen bulbs are like incandescents but use inert gas and halogens, making them brighter and more efficient.

CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) were an early efficiency option. They excite gases within a tube coated with phosphor to glow. CFLs use 60-80% less energy than incandescents.

LED (light emitting diode) bulbs are currently the most efficient choice, using 90% less energy. They produce light through semiconductors and contain a driver to convert current.

When choosing a bulb, consider factors like energy use, light output and appearance in addition to your specific needs. LED bulbs generally provide the best combination of performance and savings.
